I spent a little time looking over some old brackets for the National Prep tournament and it is remarkable how Maryland schools dominated in the 1980s. Mount St. Joe started a run there with a National Prep title in 1980, took a year off, and then won two more in 1983 and 1984, and closed out the decade with a title in 1989. That is a pretty remarkable run of success but Mount St. Joe’s four titles would be equaled by four titles from Bullis, who was able to run off a pretty incredible run of four consecutive titles in 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1988.

That decade also saw Maryland wrestlers come home with several Outstanding Wrestler honors as Lenny Bernstein, Bullis 1983, and Andre Kelly, Bullis 1988 won the award. Mount St. Joseph had Sean Schaufel as OW in 1984. . . . and arguable could claim alum Rico Chipparelli of Blair academy who had previously attended Mount St. Joe and won state and National Titles.

That impressive 80s decade was record-setting for Maryland, but an even more powerful team from Maryland, and from the WCAC would soon set a more impressive standard with 6 team titles in the 1990s.
